What you need before you start

Learning how to set up IPTV is far simpler than most people expect, largely because there is no hardware to install and no engineer to book. You need three things and you almost certainly have all of them already:

  • A broadband connection — around 15 Mbps for HD, 25 Mbps or more for 4K. Most UK packages clear both comfortably.
  • A device that runs apps — a smart TV, streaming stick, Android box, phone, tablet or laptop.
  • Your login details — sent to you after subscribing, usually within ten minutes.

Nothing is posted to you, nothing is rented, and there is no box to wire in behind the television.

The three steps, whatever your device

Every setup follows the same shape regardless of hardware:

  1. Install a player app from your device's own app store.
  2. Enter the login details you were sent — usually a username, a password and a server address, or a single link that fills all three.
  3. Wait for the channel list to load. The first load takes a minute or two as the guide downloads; after that it is instant.

That is the entire process. The only thing that changes between devices is which app you install and where the app store lives.

Before you start: tell us which device you are using when you message. We send setup instructions written for that specific device rather than a generic page, which removes most of the guesswork.

Smart TVs

If your television was made in the last six or seven years, it has an app store built in and no extra hardware is needed. Open the store, search for a player app, install it, and enter your details.

The wrinkle is that different manufacturers run different platforms, and the available apps differ between them. Older sets are the bigger issue: a television from 2016 may have an app store that no longer receives updates, and the apps on it may not work properly. If the store looks abandoned or the app crashes on launch, do not fight it — a streaming stick solves it for a few pounds.

Streaming sticks and Android boxes

This is the most reliable route, and the one worth choosing if you have any choice at all. A streaming stick has a modern processor, current software and a maintained app store, which is more than can be said for the computer inside most televisions.

Plugging a streaming stick into the HDMI port on the back of a television to set up IPTV
A streaming stick in a spare HDMI port turns any television with an HDMI socket into a smart TV.

Setup takes about five minutes: plug the stick into a spare HDMI port, connect its power lead, switch the television to that HDMI input, connect it to your Wi‑Fi or to a wired adapter, then install the player app and enter your details.

One practical tip that saves trouble later: if the stick sits pressed against a wall behind a mounted television, use the short HDMI extension cable that comes in the box. Sticks throttle when they overheat, and the first symptom is stuttering twenty minutes into a film.

Phones, tablets and laptops

The simplest of all. Install a player app from your phone or tablet's app store, enter the details, and it works. On a laptop, a media player that supports playlists will do the job without installing anything unusual.

Two things worth knowing. Your plan covers a set number of simultaneous streams rather than a set number of devices, so you can move between the TV, a phone and a tablet freely — what counts is how many are playing at the same moment. And phones and tablets travel, which means the same login works on holiday or abroad; our guide to watching UK TV abroad covers that in detail.

Common first-time problems

The login is rejected

Almost always a typing error. Passwords are case-sensitive and often contain characters that are easy to misread — capital I against lowercase l, zero against the letter O. Copy and paste rather than retyping wherever the app allows it.

The channel list is empty

Usually the guide is still downloading. Give it two or three minutes on first load. If it is still empty after that, close the app fully and reopen it.

It works on the phone but not the TV

That tells you the subscription is fine and the problem is the television's app or its network connection. Try a different player app, or plug in a streaming stick.

It plays but stutters

A network issue rather than a setup issue. Our guide to fixing IPTV buffering works through the causes in the order worth checking — the short version is to run an ethernet cable.

How long it should take

Ten minutes on a modern smart TV or streaming stick, five on a phone. That speed is one of the practical advantages covered in our UK IPTV guide. If you have been at it for half an hour, stop and message us rather than continuing to guess — we can usually spot the problem from a single screenshot.

We stay in the chat until it is actually playing on your screen, not just until the login has been sent. That is part of every plan on the pricing page, not an extra.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy any equipment?

No, if you own a smart TV, streaming stick, Android box, phone, tablet or laptop. Only an older television with no app support needs a stick, which is an inexpensive one-off purchase from any high street shop.

Can I set it up on more than one device?

Yes. Install the app on as many devices as you like — the limit is how many stream at the same time, which depends on your plan.

What if my TV is too old for apps?

A streaming stick in any spare HDMI port turns it into a smart TV. The screen is usually fine; it is the software inside that has aged.

Will I lose the setup if I restart the TV?

No. The login is saved in the app, so it loads straight back after a restart or a power cut.

Can you set it up for me?

We walk you through it step by step on WhatsApp, for whichever device you have. Setup help is included with every plan.

The short version

Install an app, enter your details, wait for the guide to load. If the television fights you, put a streaming stick in it and stop fighting. If it plays but stutters, that is a network problem rather than a setup problem.

If you have not subscribed yet and want to see it working on your own screen first, a free trial takes no card details and answers the question properly.

Need a hand with setup?

Tell us your device and we will send instructions written for it, then stay with you until it is playing on your screen.
